What an incredible story of friendship and support!! Those kids will never forget this year, not because it was the year they took 5th place, but because it was the year they refused to let Jake's accident derail their season. Jake - don't miss the miracle!! |

I'm working at Sharp Rehab,as a nursing assistant and the chance I had with Jake was when passing the tray for dinner only coz I work at S.C.I. module. But I see to it that I read Jake's improvement everyday. I'm happy to hear and see some photos of him doing really good. Keep it up, bro and God bless you! Jake, you are an inspiration not only to our patients but to us, nursing care! |

Alison: I wish I were retired so I could take some of the burden off your strong shoulders. I know your mom is going to turn that good corner soon and life will be better for her, and you. I hurt for you and all you are going through, and have been through the past couple of months. I know it seems to you as though a dark cloud suddenly passed over the Drew family and once the downpour started, it refuses to let up. Be not discouraged as they Lord feels your pain and will not leave your side. I believe with all my heart that we are never alone, that God is with us 24/7 and all we have to do is open that line of communication to Him, share our thoughts, feelings, deepest concerns and most of all...fear that never totally goes away. Alison, you are loved, cherished, and whether you realize it or not; wrapped in the arms of God. We all love you and pray constantly for a relief with heartache and the continuing events that preclude your "normal" life. I am here for you, always, day or night. Call or email. Love, Phyllis |

My Mom called and told me about your son and thought it would be a great idea for your son and my daughter to talk. Chloe-now a senior at Christian Unified -was in a horse accident 4 1/2 years ago-she hit her head and was in a coma for 82 days. She has come a long way in her recovery and would like to share some of her experiences. We are well versed in recovery and would like to help another family dealing with a similar incident. |

Alison, I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. My dad was in the hospital last month and had to be tied down also. It's so hard to see our parents like that. The good news is he can't remember any of it. If you need help, let me know. I can get you a portable ramp if you need one and will try and get dinner to you this weekend. We're so glad to hear how well Jake is doing! We hope to see you soon. Love, The Cramers |

Dear Jake,Alison, & Family, Your story in the paper yesterday hit very close to home. My son suffered major head trauma in a MVA 5yrs ago. He went from very little chance to live to discharge in 7 days. It also was a whirlwind of miracles one after the other. It was an unbelievable time that an RN mom never quite believes she is experiencing with her own child. My heart & prayers go out to all of you as you continue your recovery. Stay patient with yourselves & eachother! Say hi to Tony for us when he knocks on your door. Love, Barb |

Jake, you are on your way, slow but SURE. Your Mom, Dad and Brother are there with you. Patching yourself together is not easy, nothing is, believe me! LOL. Max, you must be awesome and I look foward to meeting you at Helix Band events of the future. Hal, your support is quiet but sure and totally evident in the posts from your lovely wife. Alison, mom, nurse, scheduler, driver...ohh, that is right that all means MOM! Jake and my David S. are the same year! I know we will both be at graduation, I may in fact cry harder for your grad than mine - call me a tender heart! You are so right, a silly event sidetracked Jake, but I see that he is coming back, not as fast perhaps as he wants, but as fast as he CAN! Slow but sure and I am sure TONY G will know, and if he doesn't yet, just wait, I have this friend.... LOLDrew family, my thoughts and prayers are with you as are those of many other families. Be Well ALL! |

Hey Jake, Glad you are recovering nicely. It's fun to check up on my "old" patients. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. When something bad happens in life, often something good comes along. Maybe it will be you learning to think before doing things, maybe you will develop empathy for things that happen to other people that they have no control over! Good luck to you and I'll be following your progress. Love Joan |

Just a few days ago my mom sent me a package in the mail: two letters and a newspaper article. When I walked upstairs to my room with the package, I took out the article and jetted to the bathroom with my newly acquired toilet reading. Let me tell you, the article turned out to be about you, your accident, and your therapy--your sobering tale really ruined my normally relaxing bathroom experience. Man, what a shock. It's good to see, from the pictures, that you are well on your way to recovery. I'm limited to ten lines so: Take care, keep on trucking, and I hope to talk to you later. |

Alison - it sounds like you need a rest, too! The stress of the past month will affect you even though you aren't the injured one. I know how hard it is to let things go even one more day when you feel so far behind. We moms try to be EveryWoman to everyone and neglect to take care of ourselves. Now that Jake is a little more independent, although you wish he needed you more, perhaps YOU need you more now. Take some time to refresh yourself - rest, pedicure, yoga, whatever you enjoy that makes YOU feel good. |

Hang in there, Jake! Just know that whatever pain you feel today will be less tomorrow. It only gets better. You've come so far, but some of the progess will be slow. Don't be impatient, your body will heal at the pace it can support. It's mostly attitude now...stay positive! I'm so proud of you, and I've never even met you or your family! Dear Jake-y. I have a few things to say to you. Consider it a note from the editor of your web page and from a mom who appreciates what you have come to mean to Chelsea and Brandon through the years. You are a fine and unique individual. You are the whole package - good looks, musical talent, athleticism, brains (okay, well mostly!) and a wonderful balance of brawn and sensitivity. How fortunate that you are in tact against such odds. I have seen you come so far since the day we got the call from your mother and sat sick to our stomachs wondering if you would ever be the same again. I know that chronic pain like your headaches can make life hard to manage and the future seem bleak. It is difficult to endure and most people don't understand. I also know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and this too shall pass. There is hope, you WILL feel better, and you WILL feel good again. And from what I hear, there are women lined up, for at least a few weeks, who are going to bring you lots of food! |

I learned of Jake's accident through a friend in my women's bible study at Journey Community Church who asked us to pray. That was a few weeks ago when Jake was still in a drug-induced coma. I am so happy to hear how well Jake has rebounded from his injuries and is recuperating at home. As a mom, I can only imagine the roller-coaster the family has been on. High-five to Max, who must have many scary emotions about his big bro. May God carry you all through the healing process. Praises to Him for Jake's recovery! |

Hi, Alison!! :) Just wanting to say Thanks again and again for continuing to write the updates on Jake's recovery time at home. I made sure I spent time to read your notes daily before I went to bed at night (yeah,..I can be normal and sleep during the night now , since my last day at work..). I also continue my routine, to say a little prayer for you and your family, especially for Jake after I read your note, before I went to sleep. Can't wait to read for tomorrow's entry and I love the little humor you put along with your notes! :) You've always had it in you! :) Please, please keep in touch,.. Take care..and God Bless You :) |

Alison, we are thrilled and relieved that Jake is doing so well that he is finally HOME. With you for a nurse, he should have the best recovery possible. Your nursing instincts and skills, and your Mom's gut will guide you through this time, so never doubt yourself or your decisions---YOU will do just fine. Miss you at work, but know that this is your job for now. Remember to take a few minutes for yourself, so you will have the energy to be that special nurse for Jake. Peace to Max as he struggles to accept all that is coming at him. It's a big burden for a young man, but I could see his potential last summer. You are right to be concerned about how he is "recovering," too, but I'm betting on him to be fine. There is no way for you to feel anything but conflicted about the time you have spent with Jake, and not with Max. But there is also no way you could have done anything else. Max is a terrific guy, and that will get him through this time. Can I go to WalMar! t for you? |

Welcome home, Jake! You truly have taken the shortcut path. You are a living miracle! Don't ever loose sight of that. Your life could be so much different right now. I know you are in a hurry to get back to your normal life and I salute your for your determination, persistence and perseverance. But go easy on yourself. So glad to hear from you this morning, Miss Alison. And thrilled to hear the good news - Jake is going home today! Awesome!!! Miracles do happen. Praise God. I didn't get to see Jake's card - I'll have to visit at home to see it. But Kevin told me all about it, and made me swear to secrecy. He's my "miracle" boy. He matured quite a bit, at age 10. He remembers his hospital experience, rehab., etc. - and enjoys connecting with people who have had similar diagnoses - brain/head injuries - to provide comfort, assistance, hope, etc. He's always willing to "help a friend". I count my blessings daily - thanking God for family, and friends - our 2 amazing "kids", one amazing son-in-law, and of course - our beautiful grandchildren, including our little angel in heaven - David. Talk to you again soon, Miss Alison. I'm looking forward to seeing Jake "at home". Love, Adele |

jake, i havent really found anything that i needed to say until now. 11:30 before the night of a huge honors physics test.....what had happened, taught us all a lesson. one, that you are still the sasquatch/wolverine/superman everyone knew you were...two, you have a tremendous impact on ALOT of people, and three, your just a good guy believe it or not. behind all the jerk comments and everything like that that i have gotten from you since i met you and popped your tires the first night....ive come to realize that your kinda like a big brother dude. you'll come home and see this and probably give me a huge dead arm but its true, and this just accentuates it. once you get back..here is what's in store: desert, proctor, drumming, sleep overs, sewering, adventures, skating, lieing to eachother to get a good joke and just doing what we do best. were just waitin for wolverine to get back |

Jake and family, I have read the updates here daily. Allison, thank you for keeping all of us up to date. The whole experience for the entire family and community is amazing. The posts here are amazing. Jake's recovery is amazing. Each time I visit I am reminded of another child who experienced a TBI as a 5th grader, a trombonist. Her recovery was longer and not as positive as quickly. But she has also moved forward and is doing great now. Jake, you are one special guy, and you have one heck of a family. Max you are an awesome brother and share a first name with one of my favorite people when I was growing up. I did a few "hospital slumber parties" too. But above all, it was the progress of the patient that amazed me. So, Jake, be strong, be brave and be your best. Jake's family - be strong, be brave and you have already shown your best!!! Finally, as a Scottie for life - could you let me know who the former Scottie you met that graduated in 75 was? That was my year, and yes, David S. is a 2nd generation Helix Highlander Scottie! HHS Rules and has for a LONG time! Home again, home again, jiggity jog!!!!! |

Alison,The Saturday before the accident we were speaking at the Pony League try-outs. I had been saying how I am trying to do less for my son so that he might become more independent. You jokingly told me that you were so proud of Jake because he had just peeled his own orange for the first time ever. Well, lady, look at him now! I am so pleased with the good news and Jake's continued improvement. You are a wonderful writer and have remained brave and upbeat throughout this trauma. Blessings to you and your family. Hey Jake Dave and I just got back to Nashville from your Grandpa Lanham's. We went to put a payment on the farm and Tabatha, the lady that always takes care of us went to your website so we could show it to Daddy. We were all so amazed at the pictures of Sponge Jake Square Head. But also so glad to see that Jake smile that was there again. We will all be thinking of you tomorrow morning as you get your bone back. We know you have a lot of making up to do but oh what a brain you've got under that flat head. We all love you...as if you didn't know. Looking forward to seeing you in a few weeks..Grandpa too. Hi Jake, I have to say we were so scared of how things were going to turn out for you in the beginning. It's just amazing how far and how fast that you've made so much progress! You've been on our minds a lot since this happend. We're really happy that things have turned out on the positive side. Alison, thanks so much for keeping us all posted on what's going on. We haven't wanted to bother you, but please know that we can help in any way you need. I'd be happy to help shuttle Max, he's been through a lot watching his big bro go thru this. Jake, this next surgery will seem like nothing, you've been through the worst of it. Keep sticking with it. We look forward to seeing up and running again soon. |

Well, I've been "lurking" for a while now. Sandi Jensen (Derek's mom) shared your story with me. I've been reading your comments every day and praying for Jake's continued recovery. What a wonderful family you are. Thank you for the story in the newspaper reminding all of our kids to be smart and realize they are not invincible. And, God bless you all as Jake continues to speed through his recovery. I hope you'll continue to update the web site through Jake's graduation this summer. |

You're a lucky boy to have so many friends, & a family that adores you! Your Mom is a wonderful writer. With any luck, maybe I'll hear you play drums one of these days. |

I am a very close friend of Roberta Veliquette. I believe I met your Mom at the time that Roberta was losing her precious husband 1987. We arrived in San Diego the day of the vigil on 2-15-07. I have been praying for Jake continously for the complete recovery. I am back home in N. Ca. but was on your website today to see you all was going. God is so gracious. He has answered our prayers. I pray that this experience for Jake will become a great ministry as he witnesses to other of the miraculous healing he is receiving. May God continue to bless you as you go through the days ahead for all of you. A sister in the Lord, Dottie Bradfield. |

Hey! What great news about Jake's recovery and his nice, private room! It must be great for him to be able to have friends come by. I can totally relate to the shower thing. I was in a bad motorcycle accident when I was in my early 20's, and I was confined to my bed for two weeks. All I wanted was to shower and shampoo, and when it finally happened, it was total bliss. Worth the ardurous walk to and from my bed. I know that made Jake feel like a million bucks! Keep us posted, he is making such great progress!!! |

Dear Alison, Hal, Max and Jake, I wanted to add my voice to the multitude of friends, family, and fans of the Amazing Drew Family! I have been following Jake's journey and every little step toward what is sure to be complete recovery. Jake's progress is the topic of conversation many times each day among the teachers and staff at Lemon Ave who are cheering for Jake every single step of the way! Please know how very much your Lemon Avenue family loves you all. I also want you to know that each day, after we thoroughly update each other on Jake's progress, we then talk about what an inspiration your whole family is and how we loved having you here at Lemon Avenue. Jake and Max as Super Star students, Awesome Dad, Hal and Alison, Super Mom Extraordinaire, who gave countless hours of time, expertise, love and resources to our students and teachers. We all benefitted tremendously from your presence and are enormously grateful for the many ways you contributed to our school community. And from reading the out pouring of notes of support and love, it's clear that your family has touched so many others, as well. Now is the time that all of the kindness, caring and love you've always shown to others, will come back to you and support you. |

Hi Jake, Uncle Dave here. Nice to see that you are able to get up (even if it is with help) and that you are starting to eat real food and practice with your "STICKS". Can a fastball on the inside corner be far behind. I think not. I have not been to a "LIVE" baseball game in 15 years but I would truely like to see you beat the St.Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Keep up the good fight and maybe I will get my wish. Uncle Dave p.s. I will settle for a good concert anytime. |

I was touched by Jake's story in the local paper & I have been following his amazing Road to Recovery on your web site. Our 36 year old son, Steven, became very ill, very suddenly, last year & was finally diagnosed with a staph infection that was in his spinal column & the bone of his neck. He spent 15 days at Mercy Hospital & he is now a Living Miracle with no side effects. We had everyone we know praying & I hope that Jake has the same miracle that Steven had. Keep up your strength for Jake & I will keep your family in my prayers...Harriet Kader |

Jake, I was a former ballplayer myself. I recovered from a brain cancer in 2002. At the time I was with the Padres and they were very supportive through my treatments. I know what its like trying to recover from a traumatic injury. All I can say is thatthere are lots of people who are praying for you and giving you the support you need. Lean on the Lord and trust that God doesn't give you anything you can't handle. This circumstance is just a platform for you to tell your story as it was for me. God Bless, Rob |

Oh Alison , I love you all so much...I just read your update for yesterday..the day you took Dave and I to the airport to fly back home to St. Louis. I have to be to work in Nashville at 4:15am tomorrow morning and I just want to be back in that waiting room to be with you and Jake. That hurt and grieving that we see in Jake's eyes is in yours too.. I can see it. Everyone can see it. But in the last week that I have been there with you guys I have seen you and Hal and Max turn from total dispair and worry turn to hope and joy with every mountain top that Jake tops. Jake may not have that hope yet but he is so strong physically and has such a strong character and with determination he will be back to his passions. If he can drum and do all those things that show how mentally he is there already, that is such a big part of our fears that he has relieved. The rest is there too. I know it is. Tell Esther to come up and peak in on him on the 11th floor. Maybe she is that spark to set him off. Just gotta keep him in bed till that hard head he's got can keep up with the rest of him....Now that I am back to the grind away from all that is going on out there I am so grateful for this website to keep up with the news...Not as good as the waitning room or Jakes bed upstairs but so good to feel a little a part of it all. Thanks Amy and Kristen Dave and I will be watching every day and more. Jake You Can Do It All. I love you so much my triplett. I always have and always will.. Max loves you and needs his big brother back too...even tho he will have to give your bed back. Love me auntie lexie and uncle dave...Alison's seester and lexie's husband |

Hi, Alison! I read your update about Jake tonight 2/22, and it put a smile on my face, knowing that he's much more awake and recognize his family even more, and even the car race at Fontana! That one really made me smile. Somehow he was able to remember about that event that was told before the accident...pretty amazing! I've been praying for Jake, you and the whole family. You are the most amazing Mom any kids would like to have. I wish you were my mom! You are so patient, kind hearted, humble, great sense of humor, just beautiful inside and out. That is the first and FOREVER impression since I met you at work. I will continue to pray for Jake and for his long recovery road up ahead. Thanks for taking the time to update everyone about Jake through this website. I will miss working with you, Alison! And please keep in touch! God Bless All of You!! :) |

I am deeply touched by your last message...It sounds like a true miracle to me! I gave my co-worker, Shelly Atkinson from the Sharp on Survival (akaThink First), a copy of the article from the UT yesterday...we had a hard time tracking a paper down, but I snuck one from a patients room! (She was the one quoted from the article);her Mom had called her at work to try to read the article! Alot of us at work are praying for Jake, and it sounds as if these prayers are working! Brain injuries are all unique as I'm sure you are aware of. There are alot of resources out there...please let me know if you need anything! You have no idea how many times I have turned to talk to you in 3rd period and realize that you aren't there, makes me miss you that much more every time. So hurry on back so I won't be lonely. Mr. Estes says he wishes you well. The other day he was doing attendance and he turns to me and says "poor lonely Cynthia." And it's also kinda wierd to look at the back of the room in band and not see you there with all the rest of the drummers. Hurry please! Much love! |

Well, I don't know Jake, and I live many miles away, but after hearing about what happened, there is one thing that not only I, but everyone else that has read about this to see, and that is for Jake's full recovery. And a little something to Jake: You may not want your friends to see you now, but you have to realize, no matter how good or bad you look, no matter what you did to end up like this, you have to know, they are still your friends, and they want the best for you. They want to be by your side in order to help you get through this, and you know, it will feel much better when you know you have friends as caring and as passionate as you do now to care for you as much as they do. I hope that you understand how much your friends, family, and even the random people like me who are very concerned about your injuries, and hope that you will get better soon. |

The cliche "get well soon" hardly seems fitting at such a crucial time in your life, so, I've been attempting to come up with what to say that would be most fitting, most approrpiate, and I just have no idea. Just know that I pray for your successful recovery and soon. You've always blown people away with your accomplishments, so I have the utmost faith that you will surprise us yet again. Good luck, buddy! |

Dear, Jake, Allision, Hal and Max and all other fmaily and freinds. What an amazing relief for you all! It's so wonderful that you are back on the road to recovery Jake. I've been watching Amy develop this website and am astonished by the love and support that you have, and how you have touched the lives of so many, and are giving back, again, in your time of need! Not that it is a surprise, because your family who has given sooo much over the years deserves it back two fold. I still can't believe, though, Jake you were at our home just a few weeks ago for Chelsea's big 18th birthday party. I saw you and smilied, but wished I had taken the time to talk more to you. It's always those split seconds in life that you wish you may have done something differently. But you can't have any regrets in life. Life is too short and too precious! We only must learn from our experiences in life and then grow better from them. My brother too, had a brain injury and had his skull crushed and is now fully recovered. The human body is amazing thing and if we are blessed and give it the good fight it will heal for us. God bless you Jake, and your family during your road to recovery... Hey, and maybe you can make it to Chayne's 18th party. |

From the first moment I heard of Jake's plight, your family has never been far from my thoughts and prayers. I am so happy that he is making such miraculous progress! I know with the love and support of the amazing Drew family and friends that he will continue to heal and recover. Please remember as caregivers to take care of yourselves, also. A special hug to Max - it is hard to be the brother in the midst of all of this, but he will be an important part of of the whole journey your family is now undertaking. i look forward to hearing the news of your family's continued health and happiness. Goethe said, "What doesn't kill us makes us stronger". Now, I've always hated that quote, but it is all too true. You will all emerge from this stronger and more resilent than ever. All my best, vo |

Dear Alison, Hal, Max, and Jake- so thrilled to hear that Jake is doing so well, and the tube is out!! What a relief for all of you, especially Jake. I took care of my Dad for 3 years, 24/7, and the last 8 months he was on a ventilator, with a trach. We "talked" by writing on white erase boards and he was so frustrated that he couldn't speak. My Dad never got off the ventilator,so I truly understand how important this step is in Jake's recovery. My daughter, Kym, was attacked by a 150 lb. German Shepherd dog when she was 2 years old. He sunk his teeth into her brain and caused major trauma. When the doctor said,"IF she survives surgery, she will probably be totally paralyzed, and I don't know how her brain will be," I felt like someone slugged me right in the heart. By the Grace of God, the talented skills of her surgeon, and the kind and caring Peds nurses at Grossmont Hospital (the old floor, upstairs), Kym recovered. Every day, all day, I waited at her b!
edside for any sign that she was going to be OK. Back then, I got to see her 10 minutes out of each hour in ICU, and had to leave at night. I was there early each morning, ready to go in when it was "allowed." I stayed each night til they kicked me out to go home and "rest." Ha! Who wants to rest when your child is in ICU, just hanging on? Alison, I have been feeling your pain as you waited for Jake to wake up, and I share your joy now as you watch him return. I know some of what you are going through, and I hope you will take time for yourself, too, because Jake will need your exceptional care when he gets home. |

Hi Alison and Hal. I am friends with Amy Sanders and my daughter Shanon is very good friends with Chelsea. Jake has been at our house several times for their famous"bonfires" as has Shanon at your house!...I always ask Shanon..who is that handsome boy?! My prayers and healing thoughts are with Jake and I'm so happy to hear of his amazing improvements!!! I work at Grossmont Hospital in the physical Rehab unit and actually wrote you a note today in Peds just in case you ever get the opportunity to stop by there.. I would love to see Jake come to Rehab for his therapies but I know how complicated that all gets. We have a pretty good team there. I'll touch base with Amy to see if there is anything we can do to help...maybe the Grossmont employees can give some pto time? Thank God for these miracles and love! Stephanie |

Your story has traveled to thte Grand Canyon where I am the Health Aide for a small school in Grand Canyon National Park. I have trouble reading and writing these notes without tears for you all. I am a mother of five sons, who attended Grossmont and until 4 years ago I too lived in La Mesa and worked at Mercy Hospital. My sons have done the "what the ****?" and I've been in ER for years. Your situation is amazing and I'm so happy for you as Jake recovers. Time will go slowly and yet the changes are like seasons, on their own course and gratifying to be a part of. This will be a new type of work for all of you. Keep the faith and re-discover the miracles of life that have opened up for you. Peggy |

Dear Alison Family, The letter from the Williams was very inspiring and full of hope for your son. My niece, Sarah, also experienced a horrific accident and subsequent brain injuries when her Jetta was hit by an 18 passenger van. She had her Bible next to her on the front seat of the car. Sarah had many surgeries and a long recovery period as well, but God gave her a second chance, and we thank Him for this precious time. Sarah is 28 years old and recently moved with her Mom to Austin, Texas. From my understanding, she will be living with other young people in a group home very soon. When your son is able, he may want to e-mail Sarah for support - she is an awesome person who has experienced a similar trauma. If you would like her e-mail address down the road, don't hesitate to write to me. I will certainly keep your son in my prayers, and pray for physical and emptional strength for you and your entire family. Blessings, Sue |

Alison, Hal, Jake, Max, and the whole family - Praise the Lord! So good, to hear the latest update! For those of us who are working without you - we miss your smile and words of wisdom at work, Miss Alison. You have constantly been on our minds, in our hearts, and prayers. I remember speaking to you, on Monday evening - the day following Jake's accident. I have to admit, I had all I could do - to hold myself together - as you were telling me what was going on with Jake, and describing all of the necessary Medical equipment/procedures/surgeries he was undergoing. It brought back vivid memories to me, of "the most difficult situation I've ever had to endure, as a mother" - the diagnosis of a brain tumor, in our 10 year old son. Another life-changing experience. As the neurosurgeon was explaining to us the risks of the surgery that would need to be done - I was physically there, but felt as though I were "in a fog". My husband then turned to me and said, " Do you want to have this surgery done?" I simply said, "I! don't think we have a choice." His tumor had grown to the extent, it was blocking the 3rd and 4th ventricles - and the fluid was just "damming up" in his head - causing a great deal of pressure - intracranial pressure. His condition was beginning to deteriorate - he was vomiting frequently, losing weight, having a great deal of difficulty focusing, doing things he had been able to do - for example, his handwriting was progressively getting worse, etc. He was beginning to display signs of tremors, as he would try to reach for something, for example. His balance was deteriorating, etc., etc. - all signs of brain injury. Following his surgery to remove the tumor - the scenario was much the same, as Jake's - IV's, numerous lines, ICP bolt monitor (which reminded me of something out of Frankenstein - scary). I remember all too well, the cooling blanket - that I absolutely hated to see him experience, with all the shaking and shivering, etc. that went with it. AFter wor! king with you for almost 21 years, Alison, I believe we often have the same perspective on things. However, I experienced my son's injury - before I even knew you - it was about a year after my son's injury/recovery period - I became an employee of Sharp Grossmont Peds. Actually, my son's experience, our stay on Peds. at Grossmont (following 3 weeks in SICU) - is a major reason I applied for a position there. We had met some wonderful nurses, during his stay. Anyway, I have always felt - that was the most difficult situation I ever had to experience, as a mother. I never forgot the sense of "loss of control" - someone else had taken over total control of my son's care - nurses, doctors, etc. It was one of the worst feelings. I, like you, absolutely hated it. I was able to spend one night with him in SICU - the night following his first surgery - when he was having continuous seizures - they weren't able to control, for about 24 hours. After that, I , like you, had to leave in the evening - with my son asking, "why?" I remember the! look of fear/panic at times - because he didn't understand why, or what was going on with him. He would open his mouth, but couldn't talk. I had to reassure him frequently - "you'll be able to do this again", as he had to re-learn how to walk, talk, etc. So, I listen to you Alison, and can relate so well. I spent many hours beside my sons bed, and in the chapel praying - for God to heal our son, and comfort/guide us through our ordeal. I have to admit - I never realized more, than I did at that time - what God sacrificed for me, because I, unlike Him, could not" give up my only son". God hears our prayers. Kevin is now 32 years old. He does have some neurosensory deficits, but has done well. We count our blessings every day. There are so many people praying for Jake, Max, and your whole family, and we will continue to do so. I won't talk about my experiences as a grandmother. Just know, that prayer is a continous part of my life. I am so elated with Jake's pro! gress, and definitely feel his nickname should be "shortcut". God bless. We all miss you at work, but know - your place right now, is with Jake - as he heals/recovers - Max, Hal, and the rest of your family. I belive I know most of them, after 21 years. We love you all very much. Please keep in touch, and let us know if you need anything. I'm hoping to visit soon, as we're given the "green" light. |

Dear Alison, You don't know me, but we are bonded together by motherhood, love, and by the pain of watching our sons struggle and recover from Brain Injury. My heart and prayers go out to you, Hal, the rest of the family and especially to Jake. My son Ryan at 21 (a year ago) also had an accident resulting in brain injury. His was due to a fall skateboarding. He was not wearing a helmet. He was 4 weeks from finals at Cal State Long Beach. He too had surgery to remove a bone flap, had the probe reading the ICP, and was put in a drug induced coma. Today Ryan is back at school, carrying a full load. At 5 months out he was able to swim in his Mt. Carmel alumni swim meet and shortly after that played several games of Water Polo with his dad and he was able to return to his life-guarding job in Newport Beach last June. It has been a long year with many miracles. I feel in my heart Jake too will recover. I see Jake is tall too. The hospitals think all patients are under 6'. Ryan is 6'5" and they finally took the end off the bed and let his legs stretch out on to a chair. Crazy how something as simple as that can mean so much. If I could talk to every young person in America about brain injury and how fragile we are, maybe no-one else would have to suffer as we have suffered. Amy Sanders is so right - the people in your lives hurt when you hurt. Please know my love and prayers are with you. |

Hal, I don't know if you remember, but I had a similar accident as a kid.Jumped in the back of a pickup truck with no tail gate, fell out of the back onto the street.Had brain injury, concussion and loss of memory. In the end the loss of taste & smell never returned. It is life changing and my mom will tell you it was the worst time of her life also.As you know, I have an active life with sports and all the great things life offers.Be strong and patient, with all the love being shown I know the future holds many blessings for your family. My lesson came at 15 and it made my choices in life a lot smarter than when I thought I could follow instead of lead. The kids around me learned that night also, how fast life changes and if I had to be the one, then that was the plan and my accident was for a purpose.Prayers for you daily.Love never fails and it wont here. I finally got to see you, Jake. I had been sick and didn't dare carry one germ to the hospital. We have been praying constantly for you and your whole family. Our campsite hasn't been the same without you. Roger was so glad to get a squeeze from you yesterday. When you come home we're going to make you and your family a big taco dinner, just like a birthday party! I believe God has heard every prayer made on your behalf and you will indeed take the shortcut home! Love, Kristen |

First of all I want to smile for alison, who is much stronger than i could ever even imagine any mother to be in such a seriuos and tragic situation. Although I have only known Alison for a year through work, I have in that year recognized some of her amazing strenghts, not only as a nurse and a friend but as a mother as well. I mean there is NEVER and I mean NEVER a night where Alison does not bring up her boys! She is ALWAYS talking about her sons and how much she loves them! Baseball, band, school, baseball, band, birthdays, baseball, baseball, baseball etc. =) everything will work out Alison, my prayers are with you! On another note, I did go visit Jake on 2/16/07, to support him and his family, and it was one of the hardest things for me to do. I knew what to expect because of the stories i had heard, but once I was there it was way worse than I had expected. I wanted to cry. I held it in for Alison, but God knows the tears were there. THANK HEAVEN that Jake has woken, and that he was able to recognize his mother, i can only imagine how happy that makes Alison. It makes my heart smile to know that Jake is going to be ok! My prayers are with him and the Drews every single night, and i wish Jake an easy shortcut to recovery! JAKE YOU REALLY ARE A CHAMPION! BE STRONG!!! |

ake, Alison, Hal and Max - I have been praying so hard for each of you; Jake to heal-quickly, and peace for Alison, Hal and Max while they await recovery of sweet Jake. My Jake, who mowed my lawn, took care of trash containers Thursday and Friday, whose music I listened to and enjoyed, hurry and get well and be back home! You are loved and appreciated for the wonderful young man you are (good parenting skills at work here)and the great adult you will become (more great parenting skills). I wish you all of God's many blessings. Phyllis, your neighbor the "cat lady". |

Alision, I know what you have been going through and the amount of strength you have had to muster to stay positive and optimistic as Jake's mother. How do I know? I watched my sister go through the same thing two years ago when her son was in a car accident and sustained a serious head injury. I cannot tell you how it makes me feel to know that Jake is awake and aware. My sister's son did not and we had to let him go. You have been spared the unimaginable; a miracle, YES! Thank the Almighty Lord! No matter how long it takes for Jake to recovery, each minute is a gift. Our family will continue to pray for a full recovery - and a quick one at that. Look for the little miracles in each day of his recovery. They will be there and some will be absolute blessings to you and to Jake. You are right about the village - God didn't hear a prayer, her heard a roar and he answered. |

My son, Adam Shutts, is in the same advisory as Jake. I noticed Jake and his mom in January at the last Parent Shadow Day. Adam told me that Jake's mom and I are the only parents that have come to Parent Shadow Day regularly for all four years. I remember standing next to Jake and his mom in the small Career Center listening to Renee Milburn talk to the students. Needless to say, I was so shocked to hear about Jake's accident. I do hope his progress is consistently better everyday although I know that there will be many steps backward to the many steps forward. As a mom of three children, I can't imagine the agony of watching one of your children go through the pain of healing. As noted on the website by the wonderful recorder, the message is for others to be cautious no matter what age. My children are aware of Jake's accident and I will be sure his recovery is noted as well. I wish the Drew family hope as they witness Jake's recovery and I wish Jake success at every turning point. I look forward to seeing Jake accept his diploma at graduation in June. May strength and patience surround the Drew family. What a gift to have so much support. |

I am sure allison won't remember me but she use to take care of my daughter Karla when she was just a baby (Now 18) when she would be at the hospital I am also a good friend of Jeanne Woodards. I would just like you to know I am praying for Jake and your family and I know he is in god's hand and he will get him through this. I have a grandson who is now 6 and in June of 2005 we were told he had Leukemia, and we put him in god's hands and he is doing great , of course we take it day by day but I believe in the power of prayer, so know I will say a prayer for Jake and the family everyday and if there is anything I can do please let me know, I would love to repay Allison for all her kindson. |
